The guy enrolled me in the course during finals week, so I had to take the exam without ever being in a single class.

Yeah well I never finished high school the first time. I dropped out to enlist.

I went back to school here mostly for my mom. She always wanted me to finish high school before I enlisted.

I bet you a dollar Red's mom wishes he'd gone to school as a kid, too.

You think so? Training Pokemon can get you pretty prestigious places in the League back home. Red was fillin' the PokeDex too, so it was kinda like being the prof's assistant.

She does worry 'bout him all the time though. He doesn't visit home that often.

Yeah well, I'm a CO in the army of my country. I've got one person in the entire nation above me in the army. Top of everything, basically.

But my mom still wishes I'd finished school. So here I am.

I guess it's just a human aspiration. But if my old man were around, he'd probably wish I stayed a wild Pokemon, so... that's a little similar.

Oh. I guess bein' a pokemon's different than bein' a human. My dad died when I was 12. Thought maybe yours had done somethin' like that, too.

It is pretty different from growin' up as a human, but not really like that. Ditching their kids is more of a Charizard thing, apparently. Bulbs and Ivys stay with their Venusaur for a long time. Family's the most important thing in the world to a Saur.

So, did you leave your dad when you joined up with Red, then?

No, it was a few seasons before.
